Dudley gardens are often on more than one level, which makes a patio more interesting to plan. Steps, raised areas and retaining walls can turn a sloping garden into somewhere you actually use.
We lay patios on a full mortar bed with the right falls away from the house, and build steps and walls where the levels need them. The site visit is free and the price is in writing.

On a sloping garden we usually build a level patio near the house, then step down or up to the lawn. Getting the levels right first saves a lot of problems later.
Porcelain is a good choice where the patio is shaded, because it stays clean and does not go green as quickly as sandstone.
Around Gornal, Netherton and Woodside, many back gardens rise or fall away from the house, sometimes by more than a metre. A patio in a garden like that is part of a bigger job: a level area by the house, a retaining wall where the ground has been cut back, and steps that are comfortable to use. We plan the levels on the visit before we talk about slabs.
Retaining walls do real work. They hold back soil that gets heavy when it is wet, so they need proper foundations and drainage behind them, not just a stack of sleepers. Where a wall is needed we build it to suit the height and the ground, and if a wall is high enough to need more than a standard build, we tell you.
In Kingswinford and Wall Heath, gardens are often flatter and wider, and the question is more about size and style. Large format porcelain suits modern extensions with wide glass doors, laid as close to the door level as the damp proof course allows with a channel drain at the threshold. Sandstone and natural stone suit older homes and cottage-style gardens.
The finished patio needs to sit below the damp proof course of the house and fall gently away from it, so rain runs into the garden rather than against the walls. We check the levels and the access on the site visit, including how materials get in if there is no side gate.
Most back garden patios do not need planning permission. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with Dudley Council before work starts, and we will happily talk it through with you.
Plenty of drives and gardens in Dudley step up or down from the road, so we measure the levels on the visit rather than judging them by eye. A small difference in height decides where the water ends up.
We cover all of Dudley, including Netherton, Kingswinford, Brierley Hill, Gornal, Coseley, Wall Heath and Woodside. Dudley is about six miles south of Wolverhampton, so we are never far away. If you are not sure whether we cover your street, call us and we will tell you straight away.
