Stourbridge has plenty of older homes with long gardens, and a well laid natural stone patio suits them perfectly. Newer homes around Norton and Wordsley often go for porcelain instead, for a clean modern finish.

Older houses often have the damp proof course quite low, so the patio levels need care. We keep the finished surface below it so water stays away from the walls.
Indian sandstone and natural stone weather nicely and suit older brick. We can also match steps and walls to the patio.
Behind the Victorian and Edwardian houses around Oldswinford, Wollaston and Pedmore, gardens are often long, with old brick walls, established trees and sometimes an original path running down the middle. A new patio there works best when it respects what is already there, picking up the colour of the old brick and the line of the existing path.
Older houses often have air bricks and a damp proof course close to the ground, and many have had the garden level raised over the years. We check both before we dig, and sometimes the right answer is to lower the ground by the house rather than build the patio up to it. Covering an air brick or bridging the damp course causes problems inside, which no one wants from a new patio.
In Lye, Amblecote, Wordsley and Norton, newer gardens are usually more regular in shape, and large format porcelain gives a clean, contemporary look. For older homes, Indian sandstone or a natural stone with a weathered finish ages well and sits comfortably against older brick.
The finished patio needs to sit below the damp proof course of the house and fall gently away from it, so rain runs into the garden rather than against the walls. We check the levels and the access on the site visit, including how materials get in if there is no side gate.
Most back garden patios do not need planning permission. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with Dudley Council before work starts, and we will happily talk it through with you.
In the older parts of Stourbridge, around Oldswinford and Wollaston, we check for old clay drains, gullies and air bricks near the house before we dig, so the new surface does not block or damage them.
